Haag Fires 31 on Second Nine, Leads Stocker Cup
- Low scores prevail on perfectly manicured Preserve Golf Club

Carmel, CA: The Stocker Cup kicked off with a 200 yard 5-iron for eagle 2, holed at the par-4 1st by veteran amateur Casey Boyns of Pacific Grove. And while the eagle didn't set Boyns on fire (he shot a solid 74 however) it did set the tone for birdies and low scores as 9 players bettered par on the challenging Preserve Golf Club.

The leader, Randy Haag, started his round the polar-opposite of Boyns' (whose post hole-out screams could be heard as far away as Carmel Valley, according to him) as he started at the 10th with a tough double bogey. The recovery was stellar, as would be expected from a player coming off a solid fall of golf that included a match play victory over 3-time Walker cupper Gary Wolstenhome at last month's US Mid Amateur in Georgia.

Haag, a member of San Francisco's Olympic Club, shot 36 on the back nine after his rough start, then lit up the front, his second nine, with 3 birdies and an eagle. The eagle, on the par-5 8th hole, had Haag pondering the course record.

"I thought the record was 66, and when I hit it close on 9 maybe I could tie it," remarked Haag.

Indeed, 66 is the competitive course record, fired by Tim Hogarth in 2000, the first year the Stocker Cup was held at the Preserve.

Haag is in close quarters at the top of the leaderboard, trailed by Mike Goodes, of Reidsville, North Carolina, who shot 68, and Haag's fellow Olympic Club member Phil Huff of Livermore, California, who fired a fine 69 that was marked by solid ballstriking and the occasional birdie that followed as Huff hit 16 greens in regulation.

Play continues tomorrow in this 72 hole individual/54 hole team, event.

Tournament Notebook:

Casey Boyns' son, Christopher, was hard at work 'on the bag' today, and as many people know his father is Pebble Beach's most famous caddy. When asked what Christoper's day-rating was on a scale of 1 to 10, Boyns thought about it, and said "a nine." His son, Christopher, looked confused and replied "9, what did I do wrong?"

"Well," quipped Boyns, "There was the matter of the melted M&M's on the grips..."
