Dave Nelson Posts Course Record 65, Ties
Haag for Lead
-
7 birdies, no bogeys does the trick - Haag/Rawson
lead Team Competition
Carmel, CA: Dave Nelson shot a course-record
65 on Friday at the Preserve Golf Club to
jump into a tie for first place with first-round
leader Randy Haag after two rounds of the
Stocker Cup.
The two players are tied for first place
at six-under-par 138.
Nelson had seven birdies and no bogeys in
his record round. He made three birdie putts
longer than 20 feet Friday.
The old competitive course record was 66,
set by 1996 U.S. Amateur Public Links champ
Tim Hogarth during the 2000 Stocker Cup.
While Nelson was eight strokes better than
his opening 73, Haag shot a 71 to follow
his opening 67. He said he wasn't as sharp
as in Thursday's opening round, but added,
"You have to be happy whenever you
are under par here."
Mark Gardner is one shot back of the duo
at 139. He has shot rounds of 70 and 69.
Reporter's Notebook
Team competition: Randy Haag has played
well enough to tie for the individual lead
after two rounds at the Stocker Cup. With
a little help from partner Dave Rawson,
the pair are also hold a one-stroke lead
in the team competition. Rawson made a net
eagle on the third hole today to help the
team to a 64 today. They shot 58 on Thursday.
The team of Mark Gardner and Jeff Pickard
is in second at 123.
A strong field: The Stocker Cup has one
of its strongest-ever fields this year.
Just look at the number of players who have
qualified for USGA Championships. More than
20 past U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifiers are
playing at the Preserve, while 15 members
of the field have played in the U.S. Amateur.
Four former U.S. Open participants are also
competing.
Goal-oriented: After birdieing his first
two holes, Dave Nelson said he had 64 in
his sights. He set a goal to shoot 32 on
each side to reach that number. He got his
32 on the front nine, but left a putt on
the lip at 18 that would have met his mark.
Where eagles dare: Casey Boyns used a five
iron to eagle the first hole on Thursday.
It must have rubbed off on playing partner
Mark Gardner, who holed a 60-yard shot to
eagle the par-five 13th hole on the way
to a second-round 69. Combine that with
an opening 70, and Gardner finds himself
in third place, one stroke back of the co-leaders.
Keep it simple: Mike Goodes, who opened
with a 68, had a good explanation for what
the difference was between his round Thursday
and Friday's 73. "Five shots,"
he said. He went on to say his putting was
the culprit for those five extra shots.
Earning his wings: Nick Ushijima, who resides
in Fukuoka, Japan, made the longest trip
to get to the Stocker Cup. He had to take
a 10-hour flight across the Pacific earlier
this week to arrive in Northern California.
Ushijima has played solidly, shooting 145
for 36 holes.
